MicroLiter Defines PTFE / Red Rubber Septa

Red Rubber is the most commonly misused term with regard to septa
manufacturing. Every chromatography consumables supplier sells PTFE
/ Red Rubber. All are low priced. All are sold in high quantities. Almost
all are different formulations. Until recently, MicroLiter sold a variety of
formulations under one product number. Because the instruments have
advanced since the introduction of these products, and the demand for
consistency is on the rise, we thought it might be useful to define the
various forms and change slightly the way we sell it.
Red Rubber originally was a thin layer of FEP and a relatively thick layer
of Natural Rubber. This material was plentiful in the pharmaceutical
industry and its low cost made it the industry standard material for
gas chromatography. Polybutyl Isoprene, manufactured as a synthetic
alternative to Natural Rubber, is also a popular formulation.
Because cost was the primary decision for specifying Red Rubber, Silicone
manufacturers entered the red rubber market with their version of PTFE
/ Red Rubber. A specification of FEP-backed or ETFE-backed Burnt
Red Silicone provided the lower material costs necessary to compete
with the Butyl and rubber materials. Overall, Silicone manufacturers
have brought about a more competitive market, benefiting those who
purchase mainly on price.
The only issue related to these products stems from those customers
who use Butyl or Natural Rubber because Silicone interferes with their
chromatograms. Cost is not the issue with this group of customers.
